International Criminal Court Issues Arrest Warrant in Libya

The International Criminal Court announced on Wednesday that it has issued an arrest warrant for the head of the Libyan judicial police, Osama Nadjm. The court accuses him of involvement in attacks on peaceful demonstrators and human rights violations.

An official statement from the ICC says: "The organization Liga Defens believes that Nadjm's actions during the times of violent events violated fundamental principles of human rights and may constitute as crimes against humanity."

Nadjm is the highest-ranking security official in Libya, recognized only by the eastern parliament of the country. The attacks on peaceful protesters occurred during the wave of protests in the town of Benghazi in 2013.

The ICC calls on Libyan authorities to cooperate in the arrest of Nadjm and transfer him to The Hague for further investigation. Representatives of Libyan authorities have yet to comment on this statement.
